Piano Moving Info

What equipement is used to move pianos?

A piano mover is a moving expert that specializes in transportation of pianos and other particularly heavy and cumbersome objects (photocopiers, machines, marble, artwork). Because of their volume, weight, mass distribution and fragility, pianos are very difficult objects to carry and should be handled by Vancouver piano moving professionals. Effectively, the can tip suddenly and also cause damage to surrounding walls and objects if not handled properly.

Piano Moving Methods:

- one-story building with stairs are narrow or rotating

- distance between the street and housing

- piano value

- concert grand piano or baby grand, concert piano

- building containing more than one floor, without elevator

- passage through the window needed

Transport is usually done by truck equipped with a power tailgate. The piano gets covered in moving blankets and then strapped to the piano skip or dollies where access is possible. Grand pianos need to have their cover removed to make lighter and easier to move, then the front leg is removed and the piano can be tipped on it's side. The remaining other 2 feet can then also be removed. The piano will then also be strapped and tied to the walls of the moving truck. A well executed piano move doesn't usually require retuning unless the instrument passes through changes of temperature or humidity.

Piano Moving Equipment:

The tools used are similar to normal moving tools but sometimes need to be modified to fit the needs. Dollies are reinforced and thicker blankets are used, the truck must be equiped with a power tailgate (ramp is not very safe).

Vancouver moving service rates can vary according to multiple factors. Some of them include but are not limited to truck size, number of men on the crew, time of the month, time of the day, time of the year, nature of items to be moved, distance of move and access to facilities. Rates are charged by the hour, by the load or on a flat rate fee. Rates can also vary greatly for Piano moves in and around Vancouver depending on access and type of piano.

Vancouver Moving Services RatesThe hourly charge is the most common for in and around Vancouver BC and the lower mainland. You get charged from when the movers get to your home to the time they leave, generally there is a traveling time charged on top of the final bill of about 30 mintues on average. That is to pay the crew to get to and leave the move premises as the get paid as soon as they get to our Vancouver office.

The hourly rate varies between $50-$150 per hour, it is vague indeed and depends on too many factors for us to post it on the site. Please contact us for details or fill out our form so that we can assess your Vancouver moving needs and give a you a firm hourly quote. Flat rate or load charge is the best way to pay for long distance moves. That way the client doesn’t have to pay for full labour charges as the truck is traveling often with only the driver for moves leaving Vancouver BC or arriving from any other Canadian or American destination.

While this system works fine for Canada long distance moves, it is not recommened for Vancouver local moves unless the value of the goods to be moved is low or insignificant. If you pay by flat rate the movers will also be paid by “piece work”, so unlike the hourly wages where they can take their time (but still work swiftly and efficiently) in a flat rate move they have to rush a little. That can sometimes cause them to cut corners and not offer services as good as with the hourly rate model.
